Noah (2013)

NOAH
Short | 18 min | 2013 | Canada
Dir/Writer: Patrick Cederberg, Walter Woodman

Part of TIFF 2013 Short Cuts. An eponymous film about Noah and his relationship with his girlfriend that suddenly unravels much to his chagrin. A romantic comedy of the digital age. Stream it online (Probably NSFW due to male nudity).

I saw this posted earlier today on Short of The Week and thought this would be a cute companion piece to Disconnect which i will post tomorrow. The idea itself a reminiscent of Modern/Love, one of the Four Stories of Intel and W Hotel shorts.  The whole movie happened on a screen of Noah’s mac/iPhone screen. This is a cute comedic take on the so-called tech paranoia and an unfortunate case of misunderstanding. This is an updated take on the classic suspicion and betrayal that are probably centuries old ideas, into the digital age. Something that easily accessible to the young facebook generation and guarantee to amuse the viewers in general. It is amusing to see how the relationship translated to on-screen interaction to multi-tasking between porn sites and skype, how google altered the way people represent themselves, how rebound with strangers is just as easy as seeking out random strangers on Chatroulete. I love how the camera pan according to Noah’s eye-track, i think it allows the viewer to see how he interacts with the screen in a very personal level. Good job!

Noah is the winner of YouTube Award for Best Canadian Short Film. The jury remarked: “This film is a commentary on the ephemeral, disposable, A.D.D. culture that many of us are consumed by and living in. It tells us a story in a way we’ve never seen before and it tells it well. It’s fresh, innovative, and had the remarkable ability to embody complex emotion through the simple gesture of a mouse.”
