Reading the report about the fact that the numbers of admission for local films are decreasing kinda made me worried about the film commercial success, especially considering the film niche appeal in the first place. Hollywood summer blockbusters definitely put a damper for local film appeal. One of the local film that is being released today is Lucky Kuswandi’s Selamat Pagi Malam, which i have reviewed before. I personally have seen the film twice, once during World IP Day in may and i just saw it last night at its Premiere Gala. Here’s my recap about the events.
WORLD IP DAY SCREENING
World IP Day is a special event from Motion Picture Academy Asia Pasific to celebrate the World Intelectual Property Day of 2014. The year theme is ‘Movie: A Global Passion’. The event was held on May 7th 2014 at Blitzmegaplex Grand Indonesia. Besides the casts and crews of the film, Stephen Jenner the Director of Communications of Asia Pacific Motion Pictures Ascociation was the special guest of the event along with Mari Elka Pangestu, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economics. The speeches that day focused on the efforts to discourage piracy which is robbing the local creative industry of their livelihood. Ibu Mari Elka Pangestu was expressing her wish for the development of an Indonesia’s version of Netflix which will enable the viewers to have access to films (local or otherwise) at a more affordable costs.
In one of the press release i received the director Kuswandi noted that he was disheartened when he saw a pirated copy of his previous films was sold and wonder why would people spent $4 for a cup of Starbucks coffee and not on films. I can’t help but wonder in the venn diagrams of consumerism, maybe these people was not really part of the intersections but instead belongs to different categories. As for the netflix thingy, it would be great if it really coming true, but remembering my country’s views on censorships and dangerous materials, i am pretty sure i still need other ways to fulfill my love for cinemas. I was glad i decided to come that day though, because i get to see the full unfiltered, uncensored version of ‘Selamat Pagi, Malam’ :)
PRESS SCREENING & CONFRENCE
The press screening for ‘Selamat Pagi, Malam’ was held on June 17th, and directly followed by the press conference with the casts and crews of the film. Unfortunately i could not attend the show but from what i gathered, it seems that the press are suitably impressed by the film according to the rave reviews from local medias.
PRESS SCREENING & CONFRENCE
Premiere Gala of the film was held on June 18th at Epicentrum XXI with all the casts and crews in attendance including the fantastic Agustin Oendari who sang the soundtrack (buy it here!) with Ivan Gojaya who did the score of the film. (I was half hoping for an acoustic performance before the film or something). On the premiere i saw the version that already went through censorship edit (the version that will screened on regular screens), which means unfortunately some of the suggestive scenes are cut from the end result.
