A LADY CADDY WHO NEVER SAW A HOLE IN ONE
Short | 15 min | 2013 | Indonesia
Dir/Writer: Yosep Anggi Noen
A man is walking on the ridge of rice paddies. A woman in a caddy uniform is standing next to him. Pretending to play golf, he interrogates her about her way of life. He suspects her motivations because she generally walks with the rich. With symbolic conversation and gestures, the film masterly unveils the contradictions of labor and pleasure, poverty and abundance.
This was the first short from Noen that i ever saw. But the man is no stranger to indie festivals in local or international circuit. I immediately drawn to sounds and visual textures captured in the opening of film, the dialogue between the actors did not make any sense if you are trying to comprehend it literally. It was one of those short that you need to sit through before you really understand what it’s trying to communicate. The film actually capitalize on the use of metaphors; smart albeit harder to digest, thus probably limiting its appeal to certain viewers. But I was in love. The combination of minimalistic setting (in a vast paddy field), play on symbolism, and the quality of the actors communicates the intention of the film director, translating a story with a socio-economical undertone with an elegance.
Looking forward to see Noen’s upcoming projects in the future.
